It all happened so quickly that there was no escape. The instant the chant ended, the water around us seemed to explode. I heard a loud slurping noise, followed by a crash. The water churned, gathering speed at a terrifying rate. It spun us in circles, faster and faster, until I could no longer see anything but bubbles and foam. I screamed at the same instant as Kallie let go of my wrists. I saw her fly past me, a tangle of arms and legs and long streaming hair. My screams gurgled to silence as my throat filled with water. I gagged, struggling for air.

It was over as suddenly as it had begun. Somehow I found the air I needed and breathed in, then broke into a fit of coughing. As my dizziness subsided, I saw with relief that Kallie was still swimming beside me.

Only we were no longer in the same pool. In fact, we weren't in a pool at all. We were floating in a warm, silent sea, not far from the shore of a beautiful tropical island. Though I had seen lots of travel ads in magazines, nothing compared to this. It couldn't be real, of course. I squeezed my eyes shut, but when I opened them again, the island was still there.

Sunlight dazzled off a blue-green ocean that was as still and clear as glass. Fish as bright as bathtub toys darted past us, pausing only long enough to nibble at our toes. A stretch of silver sand lay only a few strokes away. I was dimly aware that Kallie had begun pulling me toward it. Beyond the sand a row of palm trees reached up toward a sky that sparkled like a giant sapphire bowl. Birds of every colour and variety soared overhead or perched among the palm leaves.

My feet touched bottom and then I felt Kallie drag me up onto the beach. My legs lacked the strength to do anything more than wobble uselessly beneath me. I took a couple of lopsided steps and fell onto the sand.

Kallie flopped down beside me. "Welcome to Ayralon," she said.
