Shira's Hanukkah Gift
by Joan Betty Stuchner
Illustrated by Richard Row

Shira wants only one thing this Hanukkah - to play fiddle in a klezmer band!

Her father, Yossi, says it's impossible. No ten-year-old girl, especially one who's never had a music lesson, has ever played in a klezmer band. But every time the Kugel Valley Klezmer band performs, Shira watches closely.

Then one day Isaac, the best fiddle player this side of Nova Scotia, sees her watching and gives her a toy fiddle.

"Practise," he says, "practise, practise, practise!"

So, secretly, Shira practises until she thinks she sounds pretty good. But is she good enough for a real fiddle?

It's the night of the big Hanukkah party, and Shira is about to find out!

An Our Choice Starred Selection

Richard Row was not born with the ability to draw: he watched carefully, then practised, practised, practised! He has also illustrated versions of Anne of Green Gables and Heidi. He lives in Toronto, Ontario.
