A Note About Animals From the ASPCA
The ASPCA is the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals; our organization started working to protect animals more than
130 years ago! The Animal Ark books tell interesting stories about how Mandy and her friends help save animals in trouble. Animals can play a very important role in our lives as companions, but not all animals respond to people in the same way.
Here are some things you should remember about animals.
If you meet an animal you do not know, be very careful; it may not
know that you are friendly, and could try to bite you because it is
afraid.
Wildlife are animals that live on their own in nature; they are not
the same as the animals we call pets.
Pets have been domesticated so they can live with people, and it is
their owners' responsibility to feed and care for them, and take them
to the veterinarian for the rest of the animal's life.
In this book, Mandy is very lucky that her parents are animal
doctors and can help the animals. In real life animals can also get
help from animal shelters, nature centers, park rangers, wildlife
rehabilitators, obedience trainers and local humane organizations.
