882 1/2 Amazing Answers to Your Questions About the Titanic
by Hugh Brewster
and Laurie Coulter

Why was the ship called unsinkable? Was there really a passenger named Jack Dawson on board? What happened to the passengers' pets?

The questions are arranged to tell the full story of the Titanic — from its building, through its launching, sailing, and sinking, to its discovery and exploration on the ocean floor. A special feature discusses what was fact and what was fiction in the movie Titanic.

THE FINAL MOMENTS

Did the ship really break in two?
Until the Titanic was discovered in 1985, most people believed that it had sunk in one piece. Several witnesses claimed the ship broke up (Jack Thayer even had a series of sketches drawn showing this). But the highest ranking officer to survive, Charles Lightoller, insisted it had not. Because of his testimony, the British Board of Trade inquiry declared that the Titanic "sank intact."

How did it break in half?
The stress on the steel hull was so great that it could not support the weight of the stern as it rose out of the water. Since the stern section contained the heavy engines and turbine, the Titanic began to break apart between the third and fourth funnels.
